Securing a Site for Management Facilities

It would take about 13 years from planning to site selection. Establishment of investigation plan and exclusion of unsuitable areas (1 year) → Receipt application for survey from local communities (2 years) → Basic site suitability survey (5 years) → Detailed site suitability survey (4 years) → Local referendum and site selection (1 year)

Securing an Interim Storage Facility

An interim storage facility will be established to store HLW until final disposal. This facility is to be constructed within approximately seven years after the site for the management facility is selected.
* It will design the facility with both engineering safety and public acceptance in mind.

Construction and Operation of a site-specific URL

site-specific URL The site-specific URL is to be constructed and R&D activities will be carried out within approximately 14 years after securing the site for the management facility.

Securing a Final Disposal Facility

The final disposal facility is to be secured within approximately 10 years after the completion of the research facility.
* The multi-barrier system, as applied in the Finnish deep geological disposal concept, will be prioritized, while alternative technical approaches (such as deep borehole disposal) will also be considered.
