Underground Research Laboratories (URLs) are categorized into two types: site-specific URLs and generic URLs. Site-specific URLs are constructed at the site of the disposal facility, while generic URLs are established before a disposal site is selected.
The primary focus of the generic URL is to build databases related to bedrock, conduct model tests, and research disposal concepts, which are not directly tied to any particular disposal site. In contrast, site-specific URLs are located at the disposal site itself, with the main purpose of securing detailed geological data necessary for the licensing for the disposal facility and demonstrating its final safety. The generic URL engages in various activities to investigate, test, and verify the underground environment, as well as to design a safe disposal facility before the construction of a permanent site begins. This includes studying the unique geological characteristics of Korea, examining groundwater movement and radionuclide behavior in rocks, assessing thermodynamic properties, and evaluating the performance of disposal containers and buffer materials.
