Spent nuclear fuel refers to fuel that has been utilized in a nuclear reactor. It is produced during the operation of various types of reactors.
Sources of spent nuclear fuel can be divided into three categories: power generation reactors, research reactors, and educational reactors. Currently, Korea has 26 power generation reactors, which include 23 light water reactors located at the Kori, Hanbit, Hanul, and Wolseong sites, as well as three heavy water reactors at the Wolseong site. Additionally, there is one research reactor at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and one educational reactor at Kyunghee University.
